As Canada’s sports scene grows, so does the demand for sports betting. The federal government legalized single-game wagering in 2021. Ontario has lead the charge, with iGaming market launched on April 4th, 2022.
You’ve come to the best place if you’re interested in learning more about the best sports betting sites in Ontario. We’re here to assist you in figuring out which sports betting apps, and online sportsbooks are coming.
New Gambling Law Ontario
Canada’s efforts have been going on for a long time when it comes to legalizing single-game wagering. People, including professional sports leagues, who had long opposed sports wagering, have embraced it since the Supreme Court of the United States of America overturned PASPA, i.e., the federal prohibition on sports betting, in 2018.
It is not surprising that there has been an increased popularity of online sports betting. It has been continuously spreading across the border, given that the majority of the most well-known Canadian sports teams play in leagues based in the US.
Single-game sports betting has long been supported in Ontario, and the province has long been considered a gold mine for sports betting in Canada. As the a populous province in Canada, Ontario borders Michigan and New York, two of the most populous states in the United States, and is home to several of Canada’s most well-known sports franchises.
Ontario’s legislature had already discussed easing regulations on sports betting, particularly online betting, before the passage of C-218.
The game-changing bill, C-218, was introduced into Parliament in 2021, which brought the fight for Canadian sports betting legalization ahead. The bill was straightforward. It allowed provinces to legalize single-game sports betting by amending the federal Criminal Code (the only exception was horse racing).
Single-game wagering is set to be introduced in most, if not all, of Canada’s provinces because of the widespread support for sports betting.
In February 2022, the House of Commons passed the bill, but it sat in the Senate for months before being passed.
As expected, C-218 was passed by Parliament on June 23 despite concerns that it would not be completed in time for Parliament’s summer recess or the announcement of a snap election. Sports bettors and fans across the country celebrated that day.
Each province will make its own choice
During the summer, there was some uncertainty as to when the law would take effect. The appointed (and largely ceremonial) representative of the Queen, the Governor-General of Canada, had to give royal assent to a legislation passed by Parliament.
This approval is referred to as Royal Assent. After which, the Prime Minister must then set a date for the law to take effect. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had originally predicted that the date would be late 2021. Finally, it was made public that legal sports betting would begin on August 27th in Canada.
The provinces now have the final say. The first step is to get specific legislation passed in each regional legislature to allow sports betting. Most provinces will likely add single-game bets to their existing provincial-run online sportsbooks. It is the most likely outcome of this new legislation.
Requirements for Legal Sports Betting in Ontario
Aside from C-218’s passage, it’s important to point out that sports betting was already legal in Ontario before its passage. On the OLG Pro-Line platform, bettors can wager online on parlays, in which each bet consists of two or more wagers. Parlays remain uncommon in Canada despite their benefits due to the high risk of losing a wager.
Unlicensed offshore books, which operate without a license and take in nearly C$4 billion annually, are the other option for wagering in Ontario.
Since single-game wagering was neither legal nor explicitly illegal before C-218, offshore sportsbooks were free to operate without fear of legal repercussions. Combined with the C$10 billion illegally wagered in Ontario each year, offshore sportsbooks and illegal domestic operations generate a lot of money for Ontario.
Canada’s AGCO oversees gambling in Ontario. As of right now, Ontario’s plans have been the most solid for online sports betting.
AGCO have been working on their iGaming program, which will allow consumers to access various online sportsbooks. Its main goal is to provide fans with a safe and legal market for online sports betting.
What’s more, they want to free the market of illegal ventures like game manipulation and insider betting. They are hoping to create a market where consumers can make informed purchasing decisions while also feeling secure.
The AGCO recently gathered feedback and input from sports betting stakeholders to understand the iGaming market better. Ontario’s feedback period ended on August 18, and they have given sports bettors an idea of what the state’s system will look like.
The Time Has Come…
April 4 has been the new date for starting legal sports betting in the province.
Even though the AGCO had previously stated that the open, competitive iGaming market would be launched at the end of 2021, there had been delays as predicted surrounding the launch date.
The AGCO recently released a paper outlining its vision for its iGaming Ontario online sports betting market. Bettors will have more options for placing bets.
Whole market is protected from illegal or fixed wagers, among other things, due to the endeavor. The plans are to open up the market for sports betting to outside operators like New Jersey’s and Colorado’s. It is not a surprise that it has been extremely successful there.
